Dr. Rahul Kumar, the founder of Taurean Surgical
India, October 31: Taurean Surgical, an emerging leader in offering advanced medical solutions in surgical-robotic technology and Mazumdar Shah Medical Foundation (MSMF), a non-profit organization, have collaborated to democratize access to advanced healthcare technologies for the underserved population. Taurean Surgical’s flagship product is a fully integrated, end-to-end solution aiming to improve healthcare delivery in underserved markets.
Started in 2021 by two Indian surgeons, Dr. Rahul Kumar, a gold medalist ENT surgeon and Dr. Sunil Manjila, a US-based neurosurgeon, Taurean Surgical is poised to become the new-age tech leader, putting out some avant-garde surgical products encompassing microsurgery, endoscopy, robotics and AI. This will have a putative role in treating cancers which are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. The cancer burden in India is expected to increase to 29.8 million by 2025, aggravated further by the severe shortage of skilled surgeons in India.
Taurean Surgical’s proprietary (patent-pending) robot-assisted 3D Exoscope and ergonomic flexible-tipped endoscope, enabled with stereotactic image guidance would allow surgeons to operate on more patients, safely and efficiently. This can be achieved across multiple specialities and locations, helping hospitals reduce their patient readmission rates. Taurean Surgical is committed to empowering surgeons with its novel surgical robotic technology.
Taurean Surgical would serve the healthcare arena by manufacturing its robotic surgical platforms and related products, with operations in India, the USA and Europe. The company offers innovative automated solutions that help surgeons perform complex procedures with high precision thereby minimizing the stress and effort. The collaboration between Taurean Surgical and Mazumdar Shah Medical Foundation will enable them to bring cost-effective solutions to patients who cannot afford them due to financial constraints or other reasons.
Commenting on this, Dr. Rahul Kumar, the founder of Taurean Surgical, says, “The idea of Taurean Surgical was first synthesized when I was working in a government hospital in India. I realized the importance of the role played by technology in assisting and empowering surgeons to see better and operate better, thus leading to better outcomes for the patient. As an individual surgeon, I can only impact a few patients, but through technology, I could impact several times more. So, I decided to work full-time on developing this technology and, through Taurean Surgical, aim to reduce the cost of precision robotic surgery and make it accessible to all. I request everyone to join us and help us reduce the cancer burden in India and the rest of the world.”
Robotic surgery is rewarding and promising, but access to cost-effective yet high-precision technology is a big problem. Current surgical-robotic platforms cost several crores of rupees and are out of reach for many hospitals and surgeons. Taurean Surgical aims to address this exact problem by creating indigenously built, low-cost, high-precision surgical robots that reduce patients’ hospital stays, improve clinical outcomes, and reduce hospital readmission rates.
